It is important that your Opengear device has the correct date and time set, as this affects important system services such as log timestamps and OpenVPN certificate validation.
Date and Time can be set manually, or automatically using one or more upstream Network Time Protocol (NTP) servers. In either case you must manually set the appropriate Time Zone.
The date and time is synchronized with the Opengear device's battery backed hardware clock (RTC), which persists across reboots.
Note: If the time changes significantly during configuration, you will be prompted to re-authenticate to continue using the web UI.
Setting the time manually
- Login to the Opengear device web UI as root or an admin group user
- Click System -> Date & Time
- Select a Time Zone based on the locality (daylight savings are automatically applied) or GMT/UTC offset, click Apply Time Zone
- Set the current Year, Month, Day, Hour and Minute
- Click Apply Date and Time
Setting the time automatically (enable NTP client)
- Login to the Opengear device web UI as root or an admin group user
- Click System -> Date & Time
- Select a Time Zone based on the locality (daylight savings are automatically applied) or GMT/UTC offset, click Apply Time Zone
- Check Enable NTP
- Enter a Remote NTP Server Address hostname or IP address such as pool.ntp.org
- If the server requires it, enter an NTP Authentication Key and Key Index
- If multiple servers are being set, click New Server to begin configuring the next one
- Click Apply NTP Settings
Using the Opengear device as an NTP server
The Opengear device may also act as an NTP server for downstream devices. To enable this feature:
- Login to the Opengear device web UI as root or an admin group user
- Enable the NTP server: click System -> Services -> Service Settings, check NTP Server and click Apply
- Allow NTP client requests through the firewall: click System -> Services -> Service Settings, then on the NTP Server row and check the Interfaces to allow inbound NTP client requests, click Apply
Note: Cellular-enabled Opengear devices do not support synchronizing time using their internal GPS.
