In this article, Remote is used as a placeholder for the remote AAA server type, e.g. TACACS, LDAP.
Using either method, when a user tries to log in, the Opengear connects to the remote AAA server. If remote authentication succeeds, the user is permitted access. If remote authentication fails because of an incorrect server password, incorrect user password or insufficient user permissions, the user is denied access. If the remote AAA server is unreachable or down, the Opengear tries to authenticate the user using a local account as per a regular local login.
If remote authentication fails because the user does not exist on the remote AAA server – using RemoteDownLocal, the user is denied access – whereas using RemoteLocal, the Opengear tries to authenticate the user using a local account as per a regular local login.
