By default, most Opengear device enables login on a local console port with the following port settings with the exception of CM8100:
- Baud Rate: 115200
- Data Bits: 8
- Parity: N (None)
- Stop Bits: 1
- Flow Control: None
- HW Pinout X2
CM8100 local console port uses the following settings. The reason for changing default speed to 9600 bps on CM8100 is to match the majority of device's console ports. This also enables zero config connections when managing a CM8100 from another Opengear device.

- Data Bits: 8
- Parity: N (None)
- Stop Bits: 1
- Flow Control: None
- HW Pinout X1
You may wish to connect your Opengear device's local console to a laptop or another console server, e.g. for initial configuration by logging in as: root / default
All the adapters and cables you need to connect to the local console are included with your Opengear device.

RJ45 local console
Rack mount models such as the OM2200, IM7200, and CM7100 family have a dedicated local console port, labeled "CONSOLE".
Small form factor models such as the OM1200 and ACM7000 families by default set the first serial port, labeled "1", to Local Console Mode.
The pinout of this port is "Cisco Straight/X2", i.e. the same as all the other RJ45 console ports on the Opengear device. This is the "reverse" of a console port you would find on a Cisco device.

To connect the local console ("CONSOLE" or "1") to a laptop or PC with a DB9M serial port, use a straight-through cat 5 patch cable and the included 319015 adapter, as illustrated below:
To connect the local console ("CONSOLE" or "1") to another Opengear console server's RJ45 console port (X2 pinout), you need to roll the pins. This can be done in three ways:
- If supported, configure the upstream console port in X1 mode and connect using a straight-through patch cable
- Use an RJ45 - RJ45 rollover cable, these are usually easily identified as light blue and flat – however are not included with your Opengear device
- Connect the included 319015 and 319016 adapters together to create a "rollover adapter", then connect this rollover adapter at both ends using two straight through patch cables
USB local console
The OM2200 console server has a USB Micro-B host console port in addition to the RJ45 local console port. Connecting to the USB local console on the OM2200 only requires connecting a standard USB Micro-B cable to a laptop or an Opengear USB A port set to console server mode.

DB9 local console
Older Opengear device models may have a dedicated DB9M local console, labeled "LOCAL" or "CONSOLE".
The pinout of this port is standard DTE, as you would find on a PC or laptop serial port:
To connect the local console ("CONSOLE" or "LOCAL") to a laptop or PC with a DB9M serial port, use a null modem cable.
You can create a null modem cable using the included adapters – attach the 319014 and 319015 adapters at either end and connect them with a straight-through patch cable, as illustrated below:
To connect the local console ("CONSOLE" or "LOCAL") to another Opengear console server's RJ45 console port (X2 pinout), use the included 319015 adapter.
