Always backup the configuration of your Opengear device after making significant changes and before performing a firmware upgrade.
Configuration backups can be downloaded remotely, e.g. to your PC, or saved to locally attached USB mass storage.
For information on the OPG backup file format, refer to this article.
For information on config backup tasks from the CLI, refer to this article.
Remote backup and restore
To download the current configuration as a backup using your browser:
- Login in the Opengear web UI as root or an admin group user
- Click System -> Configuration Backup -> Remote Backup -> Save Backup
- Save the OPG file in a safe location
To upload a previously backed up configuration:
- Login in the Opengear web UI as root or an admin group user
- Click System -> Configuration Backup -> Remote Backup -> Browse
- Select the OPG file from your local filesystem
- Click Restore
- Click OK to confirm
Note: Restored configuration is applied immediately, the Opengear device then reboots automatically. This process takes several minutes during which you may be prompted to re-login.
Local backup and restore
If your Opengear device supports internal USB mass storage (e.g. IM7200), you may use this to store configuration backups. This storage is not erased during a factory reset.
First, determine whether your Opengear device supports internal USB mass storage:
- Login in the Opengear web UI as root or an admin group user
- Click Status -> Support Report
- Search for: storage.usb.available
- If found, your device supports internal USB mass storage
To save the current configuration to your Opengear device's internal mass storage:
- Login in the Opengear web UI as root or an admin group user
- Click System -> Configuration Backup -> Local Backup
- Click here to proceed, this will not affect any existing data
- Enter an identifying Description for this backup
- Click Save Backup
To restore a previously backed up configuration:
- Login in the Opengear web UI as root or an admin group user
- Click System -> Configuration Backup -> Local Backup
- Locate the backup by Description and click Restore
- Click OK to confirm
Note: Restored configuration is applied immediately, the Opengear device then reboots automatically. This process takes several minutes during which you may be prompted to re-login.
Alternative factory config
If your Opengear device support local backups, you may also select a local backup to use as an alternative factory config to Load On Erase. Before you continue, create and test restore a local backup as detailed above.
- Login in the Opengear web UI as root or an admin group user
- Click System -> Configuration Backup -> Local Backup
- Locate the backup by Description and select the Load On Erase option
- Click Apply
Note: To return to "factory default factory defaults" behavior, reset Load On Erase to Factory default.
If for some reason your alternate default configuration causes the Opengear device server to become unbootable, recover your unit to factory settings using the following steps:
- Prepare a USB storage device, e.g. thumb drive, with the label: OPG_DEFAULT
- This device must be formatted with a Windows FAT32/VFAT file system on the first partition or the entire disk, most USB thumb drives are supplied formatted this way
- Insert this USB storage device into an external USB port of the Opengear device and reset to factory defaults
- Reset Load On Erase to Factory default as per the instructions above
