Opengear's Operations Manager appliances (OM2200 and OM1200) can be ordered with an embedded cellular modem. This document details the steps to configure the Opengear appliance and enable cellular functionality.
Log into the Operations Manager
If this is the first login, you will need to change the root user password during first log in.
Enable and Configure the Cellular Interface
Navigate to Configure > Network Connections > Network Interfaces
Click on Cellular Interface (LTE) to expand section and show the interface's details
Click Edit to access the configuration page:
After clicking Edit, you are presented with the connection configuration page. Here you will enter any details provided by your carrier. These settings vary by carrier and plan and may include:
- APN
- Username & password
- IP Type (v4v6, v4, or v6)
Ensure you have checked "Interface Enabled" and select Apply.
After completion of these steps, you will be able to see the connection details on Network Interfaces page. Note: it may take a few minutes for connection details such as IP address to appear.
Enable Cellular Failover
Once you have configured your cellular connection and verified it has connected to the carrier network, you can enable the Operations Manager to failover to the carrier network if the primary network becomes unavailable. You will set an address for the Operations Manager to attempt to reach and the interface to use for this test. If the test fails, the Operations Manager will automatically switch to the cellular interface for connectivity.
Select Configure > Network Resilience > OOB Failover
Select "Enabled", set the probe address and the probe interface and then select apply.
After enabling failover, you can view the status on this page at any time.
Enabling IP Passthrough
Operations Manager's also provide the ability to passthrough the cellular connection to downstream devices for network operations. This is especially usefull if a remote site goes offline and users need network access.
To enable IP Passthrough, Select Configure > Network Resilience > IP Passthrough.
Select "Enable" and the interface that the Operations Manager will offer the DHCP lease to. Optionally, you may provide the MAC address of the Downstream interface that will lease the address.
Create Firewall > Management > IPPT Zone.
"Permit All Traffic" must be enabled. Assign the physical interface used for downstream device. Allow dhcp and/or dhcpv6 in the Permitted Services section.
As the connection will now be handled by a downstream device, if you would like to access the Operations Manager over the cellular interface, Opengear provides the ability to have an intercept port for both SSH and HTTPS. Entering these ports will ensure you can access SSH and HTTPS on the device directly. The firewall for the intercept ports is managed under the IPPassthrough page, you may add blocked and allowed addresses, by default when IPPassthrough is enabled, we allow ANY/ANY through and to the intercept ports.
