On March 30th, 2022, Verizon Wireless announced they will decommission their 3G CDMA and 4G Non-VoLTE networks no later than December 31st, 2022. This letter details Verizon’s service shutdown and describes why Opengear 4G LTE devices are not affected by this network shutdown.
Details from Verizon’s “CDMA Network Retirement - Business” knowledge base article.
- 3G CDMA Network Retirement:
As Verizon continues to build for the future, we would like to keep you up to date with some important activities. We are actively decommissioning our 3G CDMA network and expect to be completed by no later than December 31, 2022.
- What does CDMA (3G) network retirement mean to me?
After CDMA network is retired, if you are a Verizon customer still using a device that is 3G (CDMA), 4G that does not support HD Voice (Non-VoLTE), or 1X, the device will no longer be able to send or receive text messages, use data services, or make or receive calls, including emergency 911, on the Verizon network. Until this date, your device will still be able to use these services.
- How do I know if I have an impacted device?
Device models that are 3G (CDMA) and 4G that do not support HD Voice (Non-VoLTE) will be impacted. Some of the popular impacted devices include: 3G basic phones & smartphones, Connected devices, 3G tablets, Custom built 3G equipment.
Opengear has validated with Verizon Business Group’s IoT Partner Program that the pending 3G shutdown will only affect 3G network devices. Opengear ended sales of 3G devices in 2016 and support for those devices ended in 2021. Opengear’s current 4G products (ACM7000 -Lxx, IM7200 -Lxx, OM1200 -L, and OM2200 -L) are unaffected by the 3G network shutdown. Verizon’s 4G Non-VoLTE impact statements do not apply to Opengear’s 4G devices. Opengear appliances will continue to operate on Verizon Wireless 4G network without interruption. No action is required by Opengear 4G customers to continue using Verizon’s 4G network.
